“Happy Hour…Cheaper than a Bangkok Brothel”

July 19, 2010

Do you ever wonder what your money is helping promote? This is a question I ask myself frequently. The above advertisement was for the local restaurant Chino Latinos which is located by Calhoun square and is known for its shimmering sign. This wasn’t the first time Chino’s had used racism, sexism, or violence in their marketing. Some other billboards and ads of theirs stated; “Mommy, Mr. Whiskers didn’t come home last night”, “Crouching Patron, Hidden Toilet”, and “Come get donkey punched at our happy hours.” (If you are unfamiliar with the term “donkey punch”, I encourage you to look it up.)

Looking further you’ll find that Chino Latinos is owned by the company, Parasole. Parasole owns a total of ten restaurants which include: Chino Latinos, IL Gatto (formerly known as Figlios), Manny’s Steakhouse, Prohibition, The Living Room, Burger Jones, Good Earth, Salut Bar Americain, Pittsburgh Blue Steakhouse, and Muffuletta. A while ago there was an ad for Figlios that prompted outrage from the community. It said, “Working the corner since 1984,” and had a picture of what appeared to be a transgender woman in prostitution.

Here at the Sexual Violence Center, we are committed to a racism, homophobia, and oppression free environment. We see the effects of the above attitudes and beliefs in our daily work as sexual assault advocates. Therefore we feel it is imperative to address these ads and names for drinks head on. Below is a list of actions that we can take part in:
• Don’t support restaurants or bars that perpetuate violence, misogyny, and/or racism
• Take time to get to know what your money is helping to promote
• Talk to your friends and family members about your concerns with regards to messages in the media
• Call or write a letter to the owner/ CEO of such companies
Parasole’s address and phone number is: 5032 France Ave S, Edina, MN 55410 612.822.0016

I cringed when I read this article, “Cheaper than a Bangkok Brothel”, because all I could think about are the children that are forced/sold into sexual slavery in order to service the mainly American & Western european clientele. Not so funny. Guess I won’t be having dinner at Chino Latino after all.

What do YOU think?
